1912 Matchless Model 7 Matchless Model 7 The Matchless Model 7 was a British \'touring\' motorcycle designed and made by Harry and Charlie Collier. Based on the proven 85mm x 85mm JAP V-twin engine, the Model 7 had two speed transmission with a hub gear and an epicyclic gear for the low ratio, with a friction band clutch operated by a hand lever at the side of the fuel tank. Problems with unreliable belt drive were addressed by having two belts side by side, so when th efirst broke the second would still work. The 770cc engine was started like a moped with pedals and a small lever on the end of the silencer coul dbe used to eject smoke and sparks. The paintwork was all done by hand in page grey with a forest green panelled tank lined in gold pinstriping.
1913 1913 matchless 2-speed, 998cc matchless 2-speed, 998cc 1913 The huge lever on the nearside of the tank controls the two-speed hub gear in the rear wheel. inside the hub is an internal expanding brake with bronze brake shoes. the sidecar wheel is a castor-action wheel, but for the less experienced sidecar rider the good news is that it can be secured in a fixed position. this matchless is an outstanding example of veteran motorcycle technology; the machine is a concourse restoration.
1918 1918 matchless war model, 1000cc matchless war model, 1000cc 1918 The crankcase of this wd model is stamped war product. not many matchless machines were produced during the last years of the first world war, but as the advert shows the machines were actually advertised as war model. the design was based on the 1914 model 8 b and differed from the postwar model h by not having rear suspension.
